2018 MLB Home Run Derby results, bracket: Bryce Harper walks it off in Nationals Park

• Ramírez has hit a lot more home runs as a left-handed batter in his career (although that's in large part a product of getting more plate appearances against righties). He also participated in 2019, the season he nearly joined the club with 41 homers and 37 stolen bases. Acuña won his first-round Derby matchup against Josh Bell, 25-18, but lost to the eventual champion -- and fellow 2022 competitor -- Alonso, 20-19, in the semifinals. Because of the game's TV popularity, invited players have felt pressure to participate. Notably, Ken Griffey Jr. initially quietly declined to take part in 1998, partly due to ESPN scheduling the Mariners in their late Sunday game the night before. After a discussion with ESPN's Joe Morgan and another with Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, Griffey changed his mind, and then won the Derby at Coors Field.

With the format set up in bracket style, four players from each division will be tested in the ultimate battle of power for a grand prize of $1,000 to the winner. The four-minute round length was made permanent in 2016, while the minute of bonus time was reduced to 30 seconds and required two home runs of at least 440 feet (134.1 m). Each batter is allowed one time-out during each round, and two in the finals.

Has the 11th-longest home run, which isn’t the greatest selling point. But Gallo also hits the ball harder than anybody else, according to exit velocity, which is a plus. More importantly, his average launch angle is bananas, and the average ball that he puts in play is over 60 feet high, which is much higher than any of his peers. He showed a flair for the dramatic when it came to the long ball in last year's postseason. He took Chris Sale deep in the first inning of Game 1 of the ALDS, and then homered off Sale again in Game 4 to tie the game in the eighth inning.

This season, the event will take place Monday, July 9, at 8 p.m. The Home Run Derby has been an iconic part of MLB All-Star week for decades, but as long balls spike around the majors, it perhaps holds greater status today.

Weather concerns in 2015 led to a reduction in time from five minutes per round to four minutes. The clock was not stopped in the final minute, and one minute of bonus time was granted only for hitting two home runs of at least 425 feet (129.5 m). In the early years of the Home Run Derby, 4-10 players from both the AL and NL were selected to participate. Each player was given 2 "innings" to hit as many home runs as possible before reaching 5 outs. For the derby, an out is defined as any swing that is not a home run.

In 1996, the field was again expanded to ten players, with five from each league (though in 1997, the AL had six contestants to the NL's four). At 28 years old, Freeman and Aguilar are the oldest participants in the 2018 Home Run Derby. Every other player taking part in the event is 25 or younger. That speaks to the abundance of young talent in MLB right now. Some key players may have skipped out on the Derby this season, such as Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge and Mike Trout, but the field is still exciting.

The derby was held on July 16, 2018, at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., the site of the 2018 MLB All-Star Game. Bryce Harper was the winner, as he beat Kyle Schwarber, in the final 19–18, winning the derby in front of his hometown crowd. He tied Schwarber on the last pitch as time expired in regulation; then won it with 16 seconds left in bonus time. For 2022, the additional bonus time requirements reverted back to two home runs of at least 440 feet. Separate from the regular home run derby, if the All-Star Game itself is tied after nine innings, a second home run derby will be held to determine the winner. It will not be timed, and each manager will pick three players to make three swings each to hit as many home runs as possible.

The show ran for 26 episodes with the winner receiving $2,000. Since the inaugural derby in 1985, the event has seen several rule changes, evolving from a short outs-based competition, to multiple rounds, and eventually a bracket-style timed event. The field is seeded 1-8 based upon their regular-season home run total. The Home Run Derby will be televised on ESPN on Monday night at 8 p.m. "I think doing it is going to be a lot of fun," Harper said of the event. "I was able to participate in New York the first time and it was a lot of fun. If I win, I win. If I don't, it's part of it. I'm just excited to hopefully share that day with my dad ."

Or if you want to have special rules for him that makes it an inside-the-park home run derby, go for it. Also, I want to see Puig win the Home Run Derby and then eat his own bat, piece by piece, in celebration. He isn’t the same genre as Vogelbach because he’s built more like a tight end than a defensive end at a Texas high school, but he’s in the derby because I want to see him hit long, arcing home runs. In previous seasons, this slot would have been reserved for Madison Bumgarner.

He's participated in four Home Run Derbies in his career (2003, '07, '09 and '15), the first three as a Cardinal, but has yet to win one. Pujols reached the finals in his first Derby, but lost to Garret Anderson, 9-8. His 71 total Home Run Derby home runs are eighth-most in the history of the contest. Instead of the tally resetting for each round, it was only reset before the final round. Therefore, the players with the four highest totals after Round 1 advanced to Round 2, and the players with the two highest sum of Round 1 and 2 advanced to the finals.

Schwarber hit 55 home runs total in the three rounds, second most ever behind Giancarlo Stanton's 61 in 2016. And he happens to be a feller who a) seems to enjoy the spotlight and b) seems to enjoy being good at baseball. He also got shut out the only time he was invited to participate, so you know he has a chip on his shoulder. Oh, I believe he can still be tremendously entertaining, and anyone who doesn’t support this idea needs to go on a watchlist. We’ve heard for years that Ichiro could be a batting-practice legend if he wanted to focus on home runs. He doesn’t have to worry about the myth that the Derby negatively affects a hitter’s swing.

He also happens to hit dingers with élan and tremendous zeal. He’s a hometown hero who happens to be good at hitting home runs, and those are a staple of the Home Run Derby. Baseball takes center stage on the sports calendar for a few days, beginning with the Home Run Derby on Monday night at Nationals Park in Washington D.C.
